Family Stress And Business Travel
Family stress and business travel seem to go hand in hand sometimes. While it is not possible to entirely eliminate this, there are somethings I have found that can help to reduce the stress levels.
One source of business travel stress in the anxiety before you even leave the house. You, your spouse, and your kids all seem to be more stressed out, nervous, and anxious. Over time this stress seems to decrease as everyone adjusts to the travel schedule but here are some tips that I have found that help.
1. I normally don’t have the suitcase out where kids can see it. Everyone knows that I’m leaving, but by not having suitcases at the front door, everyone seems much more relaxed.
2. When I’m about to leave I plan some great family activities when I get back home. Having some fun activities to look forward to helps everyone focus on that this business trip is just a mild inconvenience and that once you are back, the fun will start.
3. Whem I’m gone and actually on the business trip I always stress on the phone that I’ll be home soon and I remind them of all the great things we’ll do when we get home.
4. Once I get back home I try and put the suitcases away as quickly as possible and try to get back in the normal flow of things again and try and be upbeat with the kids even though I’m exhausted.
When I first stated to travel more for business the stress on the family seemed greater, but once it has become more routine everyone seems more relaxed. The hardest part is actually getting through that inital barrier until it becomes routine.
I hope these tips help you and your family. Remember it is important that you try and stay upbeat around the kids at all times.
